Richard Austin,
Bruce brings significant governance experience having chaired not-for-profits including one of New Zealand’s most dynamic hospices, a regional Chamber of Commerce and co-founder and interim Chair of Tauranga’s Economic Development Agency, Priority One. As a renown entrepreneur and successful businessman, Bruce offers valuable insight into this role by volunteering his time to be one of Business Mentors New Zealand's long-term active mentors continuing to provide his skills and knowledge in supporting New Zealand small business growth and development.

Richard Austin

Richard Austin,
Richard is a Professional Director and is a Principal Director of Cambridge Partners Ltd, a large wealth management company which deals with high net individuals and family groups.  He was a Trustee of The STOP Trust, a large charitable organisation and is an independent Director for several companies.   Richard was formerly President of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants and Chairman of the Canterbury Westland branch of the Institute. He was made a Fellow of the Institute in 2010.

Deborah Simpson

Deborah is a founding Partner of The Purpose Business, New Zealand’s only brand agency aligning purpose with culture, brand and business strategy. 

Deborah’s career has spanned over twenty five years, encompassing research, advertising and marketing both here and internationally.  In her capacity as either business leader or adviser, Deborah has led the strategic development of brands such as ASB, 2degrees, New Zealand Lotteries and Genesis. 

Thanks to her extensive experience across public, private and not-for-profit organizations, Deborah has become a keen advocate for creativity, customer-centricity and culture to achieve business outcomes.

Leah MacDonell

Leah has been fortunate to work with corporates, government organisations, local regional councils, chambers and economic development agencies, which helps her to understand the mechanics of how to make things happen. She currently works for the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE) in the Provincial Development Unit, co-ordinating cross-agency regional work programmes, developing relationships and facilitating investment in regional projects. Former roles have included helping young people and the business community connect, and over 25 years working in management for a number of airlines, including our national carrier.  Leah brings diversity of thought through life experiences and as someone who genuinely loves connecting people, Leah is able to translate her relationship skills in to business opportunities for others. 

She lives by the Maori proverb “He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.”  Simply translated that means “What is the most important thing in the world? It is the people, it is the people, it is the people”.

Board of Trustees

Dr Grahame Craig MBE, Chairman of Trustees

Grahame is founder and current Chair of Trustees.  He has held accounting and management positions in the public and private sector including Woolrest Corporation and a number of SME start ups.  He was also an Associate Professor of Management at the University of Waikato.  

Grahame is co-founder and Trustee of the International Rugby Hall of Fame.   In 1991 he was awarded an MBE for services to business and the community.

Angus Fletcher

Angus’ career in business was with Fletcher Holdings and then Fletcher Challenge, with a long standing involvement in a wide variety of not-for-profit community based organisations. Currently his charitable involvement includes chairmanship of the Fletcher Trust and the Great Potentials Foundation, and trusteeship of the Methodist Employment Generation Fund, Southern Cross Campus Foundation and For the Sake of Our Children Trust and a member of the Supporters' Council of Young Enterprise Trust.

Sir William Gallagher KNZM, MBE, HonD

Sir William is the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of The Gallagher Group Ltd.  In 2011 he was knighted to mark his commitment to enterprise and leadership.  In 1996 he was awarded the prestigious Excellence in Communication Leadership award, the first time in its history that it had been awarded outside North America.

Sir William also received an MBE in 1987 followed by a New Zealand Order of Merit in 1998.

Norman Geary CBE

Norman has held senior management roles with BP in New Zealand, Nigeria and Europe and as CEO of Air New Zealand.  He was the inaugural Chairman of the New Zealand Tourism Board, President of the New Zealand Institute of Directors, Director of ANZ National Bank Limited and Otago Innovation. Norman currently holds governance roles and directorships that include the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research. 

In 1991 Norman was awarded a CBE for his contribution to aviation and tourism and was elected as a Distinguished Fellow of the Institute of Directors in 2003.

Tom McClunie

Tom has maintained a long association with Business In The Community as both a Trustee and previous Chair of Directors. He was co-owner and Director of McClunie Birch Limited, with a background in aviation and engineering industries and the management and development of a number of SMEs.  He is a Director of WaikatoLink Limited.

Garry Moore CNZM

Garry Moore is a former mayor of Christchurch who also served two terms as a councillor. Before becoming a Councillor and Mayor he worked in Economic Development and accounting.  He was a member of the founding group that formed Whalewatch Ltd, Kaikoura and a founder of Company Rebuilders.

As well as being Mayor of Christchurch he chaired the Metro Mayors and founded the Mayors Taskforce for Jobs which spread throughout all TLA’s in NZ bar two. When he finished as Mayor Christchurch was in a net-debt free position financially. This provided the level of financial stability which was needed when the earthquakes struck the City. In 2007 he was awarded the Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Since leaving the Mayoralty, Garry has been instrumental in operating a not-for-profit organisation focused on providing housing for low-income families. He also serves on Community Housing Aotearoa National Council. This is the organisation committed to housing solutions for all NZ families, regardless of their income levels.

Garry is also a  husband, father and grandfather. The extended Moore family has invested in two central city businesses and play an active  role in the rebuilt economy and the public discourse which is alive and well in Christchurch.


Sir Ralph Norris KNZM, FNZIM, FNZCS

Sir Ralph Norris
Sir Ralph was Chief Executive of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and ASB Bank.   He also served as Chief Executive of Air New Zealand Limited.  His current Board roles include Fonterra Ltd, Fonterra Shareholder's Fund, RANQX Limited, The New Zealand Treasury, The Parenting Place and is on the Council of the University of Auckland.  Sir Ralph is a member of the New Zealand Olympic Advisory Committee and the Juvenile Diabetics Research Foundation Advisory Board. 

In 2009 he was made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit and a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business in 2006.  In 2012 he received the inaugural CIO Lifetime Contribution Award for his contribution to the information technology sector.  In 2013 the University of New South Wales conferred upon him an Honorary Doctorate of Business.

Sir Ken Stevens KNZM

Sir Ken is Executive Chairman and owner of Glidepath.  In 2007 he was appointed “Business Champion - Export Year 07” by the New Zealand government, an initiative formed between public and private sector to boost export potential.  Sir Ken continues to play a key role in a range of organisations and activities to promote New Zealand business and international co-operation.  He is Chairman of Export New Zealand and Howick Limited and Director and Trustee of The New Zealand Robotics Charitable Trust. 

In 2009 he was awarded the Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to exporting.  In 2012 in recognition of a lifetime of achievement in export, business and engineering, Sir Ken was inducted into the Tait Communications Hi-Tech Hall of Fame.

In Memoriam Sir James Fletcher (1914 - 2007)

Sir James Fletcher was Chairman of Business Mentors New Zealand between November 1992-December 1994 and June 1996-September 1997. He retired as a Trustee and Director in September 2002. Sir James Fletcher was an enthusiastic advocate of projects that furthered national development. He was a passionate supporter of Business Mentors New Zealand and made a considerable contribution to the establishment and development of this organisation.

We are indebted to Sir James and the Fletcher Trust for their commitment and support of Business Mentors New Zealand.
