About Business Mentors

Business Mentors New Zealand Limited is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the success and growth of small businesses through the knowledge and experience of our volunteer mentors.

Today we are fortunate to have the support of nearly 2,000 volunteer mentors who give their time, skills and experience to the community and help local business people to succeed.

That level of accumulated support and knowledge helps make us the leading business mentoring service provider to the small to medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector in New Zealand.

Our funding comes from three revenue streams:
  • We work with private sector businesses and other organisations who sponsor our mentoring programmes because they value the role and important contribution of the SME sector to the New Zealand economy
  • We work with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) who provide funding for the programmes through New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE)
  • We charge clients a one-off registration fee which helps to cover some of the operational costs of the programme.

We operate a network of Mentor Managers based at Regional Business Partners (RBPs) who perform a range of functions and represent the service in their local area.  RBPs play a vital role on several levels, including:
  • Successfully matching clients with mentors who have the right experience and skill set
  • Making sure clients and mentors have an optimal experience
  • Building personal understanding of mentors’ skills and preferences to help inform the matching process.

Our history

Business Mentors has been helping New Zealand businesses for 25 years.

The business mentoring service was introduced into New Zealand by Dr Grahame Craig.  Dr Craig is the current Chair of Trustees of The Business Mentors New Zealand Trust which is the sole shareholder of Business Mentors New Zealand Limited.

From the beginning Business Mentors has set out to assist the owners of SME businesses to survive and grow, and consequently to create employment opportunities in urban and rural communities across the country.

As at today we have mentored over 70,000 SME business owners.
